Alumni involvement, attendance, Traditions sought by undergrads

Renovated house, Fall fest ’89 great success for Those in attendance

By Kevin McDonnell’91

The theta chapter of beta theta pi has undergone numerous changes since its reinstitution in the fall of 1987. There have been many trying times our goal, the activation of diverse gentlemen, has made it difficult to establish an identity as a house. Without consistent contact with our previous theta chapter brothers, it has been difficult to associate ourselves with the history and traditions that make each beta chapter unique. Who were the brothers who held role numbers I thorough 1520, and what were their goals for the theta chapter?

Returning to our house this fall was a pleasant surprise. The alumni had richly upgraded the physical appearance of our house. A fresh feeling of gratitude and esteem for our alumni was instilled in every active. A material respect for our house and ourselves began the process of unification which had not always been present. All of us realized that the alumni were wholly responsible for the renovations and our new found inspiration, and we looked forward to thanking them for the healthy atmosphere in which we now love.

The weekend of October 13 brought fall fest-our first chance to show off our proud new pledges and actives in our refurbished house. On Friday night we had an in-house party which catered to the recent alumni and friends of beta. All guests were impressed by the new furnishings. Finding it hard to believe that the house was the same one in which they had recently lived. Dan Wyant ’89 commented that “you guys as living in the ‘Marriott’ of fraternity houses, not the econo lodge’ beta house that I lived in for two years.” The evening of camaraderie was captured in the photo on page 5.

Saturday was the day we all looked forward to. After the fourth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan football team swamped arch-rival Denison, beta had a cocktail party to greet our illustrious alumni. Unfortunately, only a few alumni attended, which came as a disappointment to those of us who were looking forward to thanking our benefactors. The party was nevertheless enjoyable. Three betas from the class of 1976 and one from 1964 shared their stories with us on the front patio.

The weekend was enjoyed by family and friends of beta, all of whom expressed appreciation for the house improvements made possible by the alumni.
