Beta Theta Pi – A Real Pioneer

By Erik Mitchell, Secretary

Beta Theta Pi was founded on Sept ember 8, 1839, by eight men from MiamiUniversity, giving the fraternity the distinction of being the first to originate west of the Allegheny Mountains. (Beta also has the distinction of being the first to have a fraternity west of the Mississippi) Since then, Beta has pioneered many other firsts which other fraternities would follow. This includes the making of our constitution public. Though Beta has many things to be proud of, we have faced a couple of dark hours in our past. The Civil War represented Beta Theta Pi’s greatest crisis and thus is called our darkest hour. Beta had nine chapters south of the Mason-Dixon Line, and, soon after the start of the war. All communications between the Northern and Southern chapters were severed. Due to the great strengths and loyalty of the fraternity members. All the Southern chapters were revived shortly after the end of the war and me spirit of Beta survived. Our chapter, the Theta Chapter of Beta Theta Pi, was founded in 1855 by eight men. It was the first fraternity at Ohio Wesleyan. We were recently recolonized; we have won several academic awards and have rebuilt the house on a solid foundation of brotherhood, we are continuing to progress by increasing the size of our Membership and the role we have at Ohio Wesleyan and the Delaware community.
