On March 16, the Fraternity Dining Service was inaugurated at the Beta House. This was the second of the fraternity combinations on the campus, which was brought about by the rapidly depleting chapters. This group consisted of Beta Theta Pi, Alpha Tau Omega, and Chi Phi, the three north-end fraternities.
As food prices skyrocketed and board incomes fell, due to men leaving for the armed services and working at the dormitories, the three chapters saw; that it would be impossible to continue operating their kitchens individually without incurring large deficits. At the instigation of Robert Best junior from New comers town, and then president of the Theta chapter, the presidents made a preliminary survey of the facilities of the houses.
A committee of two alumni and two actives then met and formed the Fraternity Dining Service, and made all general provisions for the operation. The representatives from Beta Theta Pi were Dean J. J. Somerville, Robert Watson, William Freeman, Newcastle, Indiana, sophomore, and Howard Anderson, Cleveland, junior. The details were turned over to the man aging body which consisted of one representative from each house.
Anderson was elected to represent Beta Theta Pi, and is now serving as Treasurer of the organization. The service has been working much better than was expected, and has resulted in better food and a closer understanding between the three groups. The arrangement expired at the end of this semester and showed a good profit.
