Betas Win An I-M League Championship

Despite the dire conditions, Ohio Wes leyan continued to maintain an intramural program: and as usual, Beta Theta Pi stood high in the ranks of contenders. The fall season opened with touch football, a polite name for mayhem, and volleyball. In foot  ball, the team lacked experience and was forced to be content with an inglor ious last, despite a willing spirit. Volley ball was a different tale with the Betas being contenders right up until the last games, winding up the season in third.

The high point of the athletic season for Wooglin’s boys was the basketball season. Here the boys really went to town, with last year’s runner-up t frosh squad as a nucleus. Led by Dick Gregg, who was the offensive mainstay, the boys from West Lincoln won six straight to move into the university’s finals. Here the boys ran into another Powerhouse and came off second best, after winning the admiration of the crowd for their game fight. Despite this setback, the Betas won the championship of League I and finished second in the university standings.

This team was composed of two seniors, Fred Johnson, and Paul Miller, and four sophomores, Bill Foster, Bob Barr, Bill Anthony, and Dick Gregg.

With this success under their belt, the boys entered into the spring track meet full of confidence. That this confidence was based on fact was proven by the field results with the Betas garnering first in the team broad jump and second in the team shotput. However, the track results were not up to these standards and no points were added to the total. The final result of this track meet has yet to be announced but the Betas feel confident of at least third.

Due to a deplorable lack of strength in minor sports, the sons of the stars failed to place high in the intramural standards. However, the intramural year is not to be called a failure because of this, for the program fulfilled its primary need, that of providing much-needed relaxation for hard  working students. For this reason, intramural manager Miller is to be congratulated for a successful season.
