James Hamilton Charlesworth’ 62, a New Testament scholar joined the Duke University religion department faculty in 1969. He earned his B.D. degfee at Duke Divinity School and his PhD in religion at Duke two years later in J967. During his graduate work, Brother Charlesworth held both a Gurney Harris Kearns fellowship and a Dempster graduate fellowship. His work led to the receipt of a Fulbright grant for study at the University of Ediburgh, Scotland and to a Joseph Henry Thayer fellowship at the American School of Oriental Research in Jerusalem, Jordan.
In Jerusalem, Brother Charlesworth completed a book on “The Odes of Solomon” a work dealing with early Christian poetry and hymns, it was edited and translated from an ancient Syriac manuscript from the earliest Christian era. Clarendon Press, Oxford, published the book in 1973.
James has contributed articles to numerous scholariy journals including the Journal of Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, the Catholic Biblical Quarterly, New Testament Studies, the Revue Biblique Semitics, Kierkegarrdiana, the Journal for the Study of Judaism, and Revue de Qumran.
He editedJohn and Qumran, a work by a group of international scholars specializing in studies of relationships between the Gospel of John and the Dead Sea Scrolls.
He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Society of Biblical Literature, the American Academy of Religion and the American Schools of Oriental Research. This year James and his family will be in Manchester, England on a fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies.
