A primary focus of the Theta chapter for the 1999-2000 school year is a 10-fold increase in philanthropic participation. We feel that participation in these extracurricular activities promotes a sense of community that we have lacked in the past. Therefore the first semester was full of worthy philanthropic events that saw nearly full participation from each active Theta Beta.
In September, the brothers attended a charity wrestling event, in which Matthew Doman was the main event. The outing raised nearly $300 which helped defray the medical expenses of a young car accident victim. We were able to make it a rush event as well, as it was attended by nearly 15 freshmen. In October, brothers assisted the Delaware Habitat for Humanity which is currently constructing a house where a tragic fire destroyed a family’s home. The brothers of the Theta chapter showed their support for Habitat and have offered any help needed. We also organized the first annual Beta Flag Football tournament with all proceeds benefiting Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The tournament saw success that we hope will grow for years to come. During the holiday season, the brothers participated in ringing bells for The Salvation Army for the second consecutive year. The brothers worked in shifts of two from 3 until 8 p.m.
Several brothers are currently active in philanthropies of their choice without affiliation to the house. Some volunteer for Big Brothers and Big Sisters while others contribute time to local high school sport teams and education classes.
As the brothers move toward bettering the house we can look forward to future events such as a softball tournament, Christmas in April and a continued relationship with Habitat for Humanity, just to name a few.
