Community Service Still A Priority

By Matt Garrison ’99

The brothers of the Theta chapter have been busy with academics, rush and intramurals this year, but have still found time to participate in a variety of community service activities. On  a Sunday  afternoon in early October, Brad Chelton ’98 and Ken Bagstad ’99 walked the streets of Delaware  to raise money in the Church World Service’s annual Crop Walk. The Crop Walk is a nationwide event held  to help  fight hunger in the United States and abroad.  Brad and Ken gathered pledges from family and friends before the 19 kilometer walk, most of the proceeds of which stay right here in Delaware Country.

On Valentine’s Day, the first Annual Ohio Wesleyan University  Dance Marathon was held  to benefit Children’s  Hospital of Columbus. Two brothers were actively involved in this project, which raised over $4,000 for the hospital. Matt Garrison  ’99 served as the Chariman of the public relations committee, while Brad Chelton ’98 pitched in as a member  of  the awards committee. Preparations for the marathon began in October, and work continued  until the project’s culmination in February.

Our spring pledges spearheaded another project this past March, volunteering with People in Need (PIN) of Delaware. This organization works  to meet  emergency  needs for residents of Delaware: and the outlying areas. Their services include food, assistance with utilities, housing, and  emergency medical assitance. The tasks performed  included stacking cans of food, organizing  donated materials, and painting the PIN  headquarters.
