Graduates With Honors

Among the thirty seniors graduating at mid year was George Carey. He was the only man in the class to receive depart  mental honors in physics.

Newhard enrolled in the class of 1943, and spent his freshman year at Murphy Hall. He pledged Beta in the fall of 1940 and was initiated the following February. By attending summer school last summer, he was able to graduate in January. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps for meteorologist training, and is teaching mathematics in the high school at Bellvue until he receives his call.

Newhard’s ability in physics and mathematics earned him membership in Pi Mu Epsilon, national mathematics honorary, and Sigma Pi Sigma, national mathematics honorary. In addition to these, he was initiated into Phi Mu Epsilon, national men’s music honorary, for his clarinet play ing in the band, and his work as songleader of Beta Theta Pi. He played in both marching and concert bands all four years in school.

In spite of his late pledging, “Joe” took an important part in the activities of Theta chapter. He was pledgemaster his junior and senior years, and held the positions of recorder and songleader.

Newhard is the great grandson of Loren zo D. McCabe, Theta, former president of Ohio Wesleyan.
