This fall through the unparalleled unselfish devotion of many brothers of the Theta Chapter of Beta Theta Pi, the intramural football team reached the plateau of their efforts by clinching the top of their division decisively. To mention a few of these outstanding brothers, Lee Silvas, playing center, consistantly overpowered his opponents with bruising violent blocking, leaving many times a huge opening in the other team’s defense. In the position of quarterback we were blessed with two brothers of such stellar qualities as to make it almost impossible to choose which was to play at any given time. Robert Sargent, one of the outstanding pair, was blessed with the outstanding ability to scramble and pass with pinpoint accuracy; reminicent of Francis Tarkenton the Minnesota Vikings and NFL’s greatest quarterback. But with this great gift he was equalled in ability by the amazing Steve Miensen. Brother Miensen’s passes were marvelous to watch, often floating in the air for what seemed minutes only to drop directly into the waiting arms of one of our fleet receivers who never had to miss stride in catching the deadly accurate pass. Ever mindful of protecting these two quarterbacks was brother Brian Welch playing guard. With unmatched tenacity brother Welch constantly punished his opponents unmercifully, preventing the sacking of our quarterbacks throughout the entire season and allowing them to employ their gifted passing ability to its utmost.
