William Allan Long ’51 was peacefully lifted up to his eternal home on August 24, 2005 in Jacksonville, FL. He was born in Columbus, OH on August 25, 1928 to Dorothy and Allan C. Long and is survived by his loving wife, Ann, who continues to celebrate their 51 years of marriage. Bill was raised in the horse-training heartlands of KY and OH. He was a 1946 graduate of Delaware Willis High School. After his Army service commitment in Japan, Bill graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1951 where he was President of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the varsity football team. A retired forest products company executive, Bill was a Vice President with Diamond International from 1951-70. He joined Overhead Door Corporation in Dallas, TX as Vice President in 1971 and returned to New York City to join St. Regis Paper Company as Vice President in 1975.
In 1979, Bill became Group Vice President of Inland Container Corporation in Indianapolis where he retired in 1993. An avid golfer, Bill enjoyed great friendships made on the links of Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel and Amelia Island Plantation, FL. Ann and Bill loved traveling the continents, entertaining and joyously reveled in the gatherings of their large extended family. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Leslie and Jim Melson and their children Jed, Ann, Ellen and John of Dallas, TX; his daughter-in-law and son Brandi and Jeff Long and their children, Isaiah and Eli of Indianapolis. His brother, Dr. Thomas R. Long and his wife, Helen; his sister Evelyn Mauck and her husband, Robert, also survive him. A memorial service in celebration of Bill’s life was held on Saturday, September 17th at Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis.
