William Hayden Boyers ’22

Distinguished Professor in the Humanities at St. Paul’s College is William Hayden Boyers ’22. He reports: “I’m now what OWU’s Prof. Eddie Rice used to call ‘professor emeritus ressurrectus’. After 39 years at Oberlin, I came down here to this small Episcopal college in Virginia, where I teach courses in drama and comparative lit and serve as advisor in the Humanities. At Oberlin, in addition to my work as Professor of French, I founded the Oberlin College Gilbert and Sullivan Players and continued to be active in it, both on campus and as summer stock at Cape Cod until my retirement”. Brother Boyers and hiS wife,Dorothy, can be addressed through Saint Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Virginia.

Professor Boyers was the director of numerous plays in which I performed key and supporting roles. I often think of him and his wife as I reflect on the time matriculating at SPC. At each rehearsal, his wife would prepare tuna sandwiches with olives and walnuts (or pecans). Delicious! I ate so many sandwiches. I wish I could repay her for investing the funds to keep us well fed during rehearsals. I noticed that Professor Boyers is no longer with us. I wonder if his wife is still alive. I am doubting as I was at St. Paul’s College from 1968-72. I soon will be 75. I miss those theatre days and the grandest director.
