Once again the brothers of Beta Theta Pi excited the Ohio Wesleyan campus with two major parties during the winter term, warming up the otherwise frozen campus. The first of these parties was the annual Pledge Formal, attended by 42 pledges and their lovely dates. All sat down to a steak dinner, served by their active brothers. After the dinner the active brothers joined in singing of many of the more noteworthy songs of Beta Theta Pi. When the singing ended the band hired for that night started playing and didn’t stop till one a.m. The pledges and their dates were joined by their active brothers and their dates till the crowded dance floor was filled with exuberant masses of people jostling each other in inebriated bliss. It was agreed upon by all that the party was a great success, the band being considered excellent in playing of enjoyable dance music. But the outstanding part of the night was the reading of a poem by President Layland Silvas. Based upon the ageless Christmas poem, “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” President,Silvas rnounted upon its theme, creating the poem titled “Twas the Night Before Hell Week,” foreshadowing the impending week of terror for the pledges.
The second traditional party held during the winter term creating great excitement and anticipation throughout the Beta House, including its newly activated brothers, was the Tom Jones party. The otherwise dull campus was transformed that night into a mardi gras of pandamonium through the generosity of the Brothers of Beta Theta Pi by allowing non brothers and dates to enjoy the excellent band, after dinner had been eaten at the house. The highlight of the party, or rather highlights, were the appearance of the three pigs, penned within walls of hay, that gave many people their first view of farmyard life up close. They were well treated and cared for by the brothers that night receiving all food and water needed for their survival, though some over enthusiastic people were apprehended in the act of sharing their ample amounts of beer and liquor with the very willing pigs. All in all it was generally agreed upon throughout the campus that through the generosity and good will of the brothers of Beta Theta Pi the eampus was able to enjoy two exciting and well timed parties, benefiting the many study worn students on the campus.
