James Hamilton Charlesworth’ 62,\u00a0a New Testament scholar joined the\u00a0Duke University religion department\u00a0faculty in 1969. He earned his B.D.\u00a0degfee at Duke Divinity School and\u00a0his PhD in religion at Duke two years\u00a0later in J967. During his graduate\u00a0work, Brother Charlesworth held both\u00a0a Gurney Harris Kearns fellowship\u00a0and a Dempster graduate fellowship.\u00a0His work led to the receipt of a\u00a0Fulbright grant for study at the\u00a0University of Ediburgh, Scotland and\u00a0to a Joseph Henry Thayer fellowship\u00a0at the American School of Oriental\u00a0Research in Jerusalem, Jordan.<\/p>\n
In Jerusalem, Brother\u00a0Charlesworth completed a book on\u00a0“The Odes of Solomon” a work\u00a0dealing with early Christian poetry\u00a0and hymns, it was edited and translated\u00a0from an ancient Syriac\u00a0manuscript from the earliest\u00a0Christian era. Clarendon Press,\u00a0Oxford, published the book in 1973.<\/p>\n
James has contributed articles to\u00a0numerous scholariy journals including\u00a0the Journal of Philosophy and\u00a0Phenomenological Research, the\u00a0Catholic Biblical Quarterly, New\u00a0Testament Studies, the Revue\u00a0Biblique Semitics, Kierkegarrdiana,\u00a0the Journal for the Study of Judaism,\u00a0and Revue de Qumran.<\/p>\n
He editedJohn and Qumran, a work\u00a0by a group of international scholars\u00a0specializing in studies of relationships\u00a0between the Gospel of John and the\u00a0Dead Sea Scrolls.<\/p>\n
He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa,\u00a0the Society of Biblical Literature, the\u00a0American Academy of Religion and\u00a0the American Schools of Oriental\u00a0Research.
