Among the thirty seniors graduating at\u00a0mid year was George Carey. He was the\u00a0only man in the class to receive depart \u00a0mental honors in physics.<\/p>\n
Newhard enrolled in the class of 1943,\u00a0and spent his freshman year at Murphy\u00a0Hall. He pledged Beta in the fall of 1940\u00a0and was initiated the following February.\u00a0By attending summer school last summer,\u00a0he was able to graduate in January. He\u00a0enlisted in the Army Air Corps for\u00a0meteorologist training, and is teaching\u00a0mathematics in the high school at Bellvue\u00a0until he receives his call.<\/p>\n
Newhard’s ability in physics and mathematics earned him membership in Pi Mu\u00a0Epsilon, national mathematics honorary,\u00a0and Sigma Pi Sigma, national mathematics\u00a0honorary. In addition to these, he was\u00a0initiated into Phi Mu Epsilon, national\u00a0men’s music honorary, for his clarinet play ing in the band, and his work as songleader\u00a0of Beta Theta Pi. He played in both marching and concert bands all four years in\u00a0school.<\/p>\n
In spite of his late pledging, “Joe” took an\u00a0important part in the activities of Theta\u00a0chapter. He was pledgemaster his junior and senior years, and held the positions of\u00a0recorder and songleader.<\/p>\n
