Despite the dire conditions, Ohio Wes leyan continued to maintain an intramural\u00a0program: and as usual, Beta Theta Pi stood\u00a0high in the ranks of contenders. The fall\u00a0season opened with touch football, a polite\u00a0name for mayhem, and volleyball. In foot \u00a0ball, the team lacked experience and\u00a0was forced to be content with an inglor\u00a0ious last, despite a willing spirit. Volley\u00a0ball was a different tale with the Betas\u00a0being contenders right up until the last\u00a0games, winding up the season in third.<\/p>\n
The high point of the athletic season for\u00a0Wooglin’s boys was the basketball season.\u00a0Here the boys really went to town, with\u00a0last year’s runner-up t frosh squad as a\u00a0nucleus. Led by Dick Gregg, who was the\u00a0offensive mainstay, the boys from West\u00a0Lincoln won six straight to move into the\u00a0university’s finals. Here the boys ran into\u00a0another Powerhouse and came off second\u00a0best, after winning the admiration of the\u00a0crowd for their game fight. Despite this\u00a0setback, the Betas won the championship\u00a0of League I and finished second in the\u00a0university standings.<\/p>\n
This team was composed of two seniors,\u00a0Fred Johnson, and Paul Miller, and four\u00a0sophomores, Bill Foster, Bob Barr, Bill\u00a0Anthony, and Dick Gregg.<\/p>\n
With this success under their belt, the\u00a0boys entered into the spring track meet\u00a0full of confidence. That this confidence\u00a0was based on fact was proven by the field\u00a0results with the Betas garnering first in\u00a0the team broad jump and second in the\u00a0team shotput. However, the track results\u00a0were not up to these standards and no\u00a0points were added to the total.\u00a0The final result of this track meet has\u00a0yet to be announced but the Betas feel\u00a0confident of at least third.<\/p>\n
Due to a deplorable lack of strength in\u00a0minor sports, the sons of the stars failed\u00a0to place high in the intramural standards.\u00a0However, the intramural year is not to be\u00a0called a failure because of this, for the program fulfilled its primary need, that of providing much-needed relaxation for hard \u00a0working students.
