On March 16, the Fraternity Dining\u00a0Service was inaugurated at the Beta House.\u00a0This was the second of the fraternity combinations on the campus, which was brought\u00a0about by the rapidly depleting chapters.\u00a0This group consisted of Beta Theta Pi,\u00a0Alpha Tau Omega, and Chi Phi, the three\u00a0north-end fraternities.<\/p>\n
As food prices skyrocketed and board\u00a0incomes fell, due to men leaving for the\u00a0armed services and working at the dormitories, the three chapters saw; that it would\u00a0be impossible to continue operating their\u00a0kitchens individually without incurring\u00a0large deficits. At the instigation of Robert\u00a0Best junior from New comers town, and\u00a0then president of the Theta chapter, the\u00a0presidents made a preliminary survey of the\u00a0facilities of the houses.<\/p>\n
A committee of two alumni and two actives then met and formed the Fraternity\u00a0Dining Service, and made all general provisions for the operation. The representatives from Beta Theta Pi were Dean J. J.\u00a0Somerville, Robert Watson, William\u00a0Freeman, Newcastle, Indiana, sophomore,\u00a0and Howard Anderson, Cleveland, junior.\u00a0The details were turned over to the man \u00a0aging body which consisted of one representative from each house.<\/p>\n
Anderson was elected to represent Beta\u00a0Theta Pi, and is now serving as Treasurer\u00a0of the organization. The service has been\u00a0working much better than was expected,\u00a0and has resulted in better food and a closer\u00a0understanding between the three groups.
