Last night,\u00a0(Saturday), Dick and\u00a0I attended an Alumni\u00a0Appreciation Dinner at\u00a0Quail Hollow Country Club.\u00a0There were 310 Betas, Beta\u00a0Sweethearts, and Trustees,\u00a0and Foundation Directors\u00a0present. It was the largest\u00a0such gathering ever, and\u00a0beautifully done. Members\u00a0from the Trustees and the\u00a0Foundation served as hosts\u00a0at tables, and we were\u00a0fortunate enough to find\u00a0Marty Haskell, and eat at\u00a0his table. Marty and Dick\u00a0were the only Theta Betas\u00a0present, with Dick proudly\u00a0wearing his Fraternal Fifties\u00a0pin. There were 25 or 30 F. F.\u2019s in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>The honoree of the\u00a0evening was Hugh McCall,\u00a0North Carolina \u201957. And\u00a0he was presented with the\u00a0Oxford Cup in recognition\u00a0of his achievements over the\u00a0years. The summary notes in\u00a0the published program spoke\u00a0of his \u201clegacy of leadership\u00a0as an executive, citizen,parent and fraternity man\u201d.\u00a0Known best as chairman and\u00a0CEO of Bank of America,\u00a0the nation\u2019s largest bank,\u00a0he also is widely recognized\u00a0for his community efforts,\u00a0from developing art galleries,\u00a0refurbishing a burned-out\u00a0church into a residence and\u00a0gallery for artists, helping\u00a0with funding for special\u00a0projects such as United Way,\u00a0Blumenthal Performing Arts\u00a0Center, our Arts and Science\u00a0Council, and on and on.\u00a0Charlotte would not be the\u00a0city it is without the work\u00a0and leadership of Hugh,\u00a0and his wife, Jane. They\u00a0are members of our church,\u00a0Covenant Presbyterian, and\u00a0we have worked with Hugh\u00a0in the building of Habitat\u00a0houses. He is a terrific guy\u00a0\u2014 an outstanding Beta!\u00a0He was truly touched to\u00a0have been awarded the\u00a0Oxford Cup, and gave a\u00a0great acceptance speech\u00a0with lots of references to\u00a0his years in ETA chapter in\u00a0UNC in Chapel Hill, and\u00a0Beta friendships which have\u00a0lasted and grown stronger\u00a0over the years.\u00a0This was the 62nd Oxford\u00a0Cup awarded by Beta, since\u00a01984, when the very first\u00a0one went to our beloved Dr.\u00a0Seth Brooks, who married\u00a0Dick and me almost 54 years\u00a0ago in Washington. Dr. Seth\u00a0was so thrilled with his first\u00a0all-Beta wedding \u2014 Dick as\u00a0groom, Dick Davenport as\u00a0Best Man, and ushers Norm\u00a0Slenker, Bob Neff, Dick\u00a0DeVos, and Milt Irvin. Tom,\u00a0were you one of the crowd\u00a0of Betas at our wedding, all\u00a0of whom sang several Beta\u00a0songs at the reception?\u00a0The evening started\u00a0with Jim Martin (our\u00a0former governor) giving\u00a0the welcoming remarks and\u00a0introductions; the singing of \u00a0\u201cLoving Cup\u201d, then the \u00a0Beta Doxology which\u00a0followed a spoken invocation.\u00a0To close the evening, after\u00a0much conversation, a few\u00a0speeches and a great time,\u00a0we sang \u201cMarching Along\u201d.\u00a0Such a sound, and such\u00a0memories, hearing the mass\u00a0of men\u2019s voices in those great\u00a0songs! It was a very special\u00a0evening, and Dick and I\u00a0were pleased to have been a\u00a0part of it!<\/p>\n<p>We wanted to share\u00a0impressions of the evening,\u00a0and let you know that Beta\u00a0Theta Pi is still very much\u00a0alive and well.\u00a0Best regards to you!\u00a0Ginger Carter McClintock<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hi Tom!
